How Bails Works
Anyone committing a crime can be arrested and taken to the Police Department to be booked (fingerprints are taken and photographed), and temporarily put into jail. If a defendant was arrested for a serious misdemeanor or felony, it’s likely that the defendant will not be released until the defendant or the defendants family posts bail.
Ways To Post Bail
The amount the bail costs depends on the seriousness of the crime charged against the accused. If the defendant of his or her family decides to post a bond for the release of the defendant, there are three ways of accomplishing this:
Bail Bond – The most popular option used in Los Angeles County and San Dimas Jail. A defendant or their family posts the bail bond ( a document given to the court by the bail bond company) to guarantee the defendant will show to all required court appearances.
Cash Bail – Cash, check, or money order has to be deposited in the full amount of the bail to the law enforcement agency holding the defendant. Once completed, the defendant is released from jail and given the date for their future court appearance.
Real Property – The defendant or their family may give any equity in the real property to post bond. Generally, equity has to be double the value of the bail required for releasing the defendant. If court appearances are missed, the property can be forfeited.
